Try These Weighted Lunges to Get Powerful Looking Legs

get powerful looking legs with weightsLunges are a go-to exercise for anyone who wants to get powerful looking legs, but once you have become comfortable with doing lunges without weights, you can take your workout to the next level by incorporating the use of weights with those lunges. Check out the exercise tips below to get started.

Lunges with Dumbbells at Your Sides

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the use of weights when you are doing lunges is by simply picking up a pair of dumbbells. You do not have to use a lot of weight either, especially when you are first starting off. So perhaps pick up a pair of 5-lb. dumbbells that you can simply hold at your sides, with your arms straight down. Then move into front lunges and back lunges while dealing with the extra weight that your legs are forced to move through.

Add in Some Shoulder Presses

Another way to get powerful looking legs with a simple pair of dumbbells is by holding the weights at your side until you get into the front lunge position. Then hold there and straighten up as you lift the dumbbells over your head. Repeating this motion will work your legs while also toning up your shoulders.

Use Ankle Weights

Yet another simple way to add weights to your lunge routine is by simply wrapping an ankle weight around each leg. This will add on extra weight every time you step forward or backward into a lunge position, and the added resistance will be a good way to challenge the muscles in your lower body.

Use a Barbell

If you are strong enough, if you are accustomed to using a large barbell across the back of your neck and shoulders, and if you are looking for a challenge, you can swap those dumbbells for a heavier barbell instead. This is an intermediate to advanced level workout that will really tone up your lower body, especially the quads. Just be sure you have someone there to spot you at the beginning, as the barbell needs to be held correctly to prevent injuries as you move into and out of your front lunges.

With these weighted lunges, you can get powerful looking legs more quickly and easily than you otherwise would. Just be sure to also follow a healthy diet and lifestyle as you work hard at the gym to slim down and build muscles, as doing so will help ensure the best results.
